6 Legal Knowledge Management Software Options Compared

Legal knowledge management software helps lawyers find and reuse precedents, matter history, expertise and work product. The six options below differ in what they manage: the document system itself, AI review over document sets, firm experience data, or general workplace content.

Most firms combine a document management system with one or more AI layers.

This comparison uses each vendor's public product pages, read on 3 November 2026. It is not legal advice and needs review by qualified legal technology and ethics counsel before you rely on it.

How We Evaluated

We did not test these products. Each was reviewed against the same five criteria using vendor pages only:

• Content scope: documents, email, matters, experience data or all workplace content

• AI capabilities: search, extraction, drafting or question answering over firm content

• Governance: permissions and ethical walls described by the vendor

• Integration: connections to other AI tools and document systems

• Fit: the organization type the product appears built for

Pricing is not public for most of these products, so we have not compared it.

1. iManage

iManage describes its platform as a governed knowledge foundation. It names AI Enrichment for classifying documents and extracting details such as parties and governing law, plus an MCP server for approved AI tools.

• Strength: ethical walls, access controls and audit described as enforced across AI use

• Watch for: confirm which AI features are included or sold as add-ons

• Fits: large firms that want the DMS as the knowledge foundation

2. NetDocuments

NetDocuments offers a cloud document system with AI features. Its Legal Context Graph, which maps matters, documents and people, was listed with a waitlist when we checked.

• Strength: permissions and ethical walls described as respected by AI and external tools via MCP

• Watch for: confirm which features are generally available versus waitlist

• Fits: firms and legal departments preferring a cloud DMS

3. Harvey Vault

Harvey Vault stores document sets for AI review. Harvey describes review tables, knowledge bases of precedents and playbooks, and syncing from systems such as iManage and SharePoint.

• Strength: structured extraction across large document sets

• Watch for: Vault sits beside, not instead of, your system of record

• Fits: due diligence, discovery organization and precedent extraction

4. Litera Foundation

Litera Foundation centralizes matter history, lawyer credentials and client data. Its Lito agent answers natural-language questions such as "what have we done in this area?" with citations.

• Strength: experience data for pitches, pricing and expertise location

• Watch for: it manages experience records, not documents

• Fits: business development, pricing and knowledge teams in firms

5. Thomson Reuters CoCounsel

CoCounsel is an AI assistant grounded in Thomson Reuters content and connected to Westlaw, Practical Law, Microsoft 365 and document management partners.

• Strength: grounding in authoritative legal content plus firm documents

• Watch for: it is an assistant, so firm knowledge structure still depends on your DMS

• Fits: research-heavy teams already licensed for Thomson Reuters content

6. Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot answers questions over content a user can already access in Microsoft 365, such as SharePoint, Outlook and Teams.

• Strength: works where many in-house teams already store knowledge

• Watch for: answers reflect existing permissions, so oversharing in SharePoint becomes visible

• Fits: corporate legal departments standardized on Microsoft 365

Our own product. LuMay's Lexintis legal agents include a knowledge agent for counsel that searches matters, contracts and precedent. We are not ranked in this list. See AI for legal teams.

Questions to Ask Every Vendor

• Which content types are indexed: documents, email, matters, time entries?

• Are ethical walls and matter permissions enforced at retrieval time?

• Is client content used to train models, and what is the retention period?

• Can answers cite the exact source document and version?

• Which external AI tools can connect, and under what controls?

• What is generally available today versus beta or waitlist?

Ethics and Governance Considerations

ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) says lawyers using generative AI must consider competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision and fees. Firm knowledge often contains client confidential information under Model Rule 1.6.

Check your state's rules and bar guidance, which may differ from the ABA Model Rules. Using any tool here does not guarantee compliance.

Selection Checklist

• Define the top 20 knowledge questions lawyers ask today

• Map where the answers live: DMS, email, practice management, experience data

• Confirm permission and ethical wall enforcement with a test matter

• Run a pilot on one practice group with real queries

• Measure time to find precedent and lawyer satisfaction before and after

• Have ethics counsel review confidentiality, client consent and vendor terms

Limitations

Vendor features change quickly and several are in beta or waitlist. We relied on public pages and did not test accuracy. This article needs qualified attorney review before publishing and is not legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Legal AI

1. What is legal knowledge management software?

It is software that helps lawyers capture, find and reuse precedents, matter history, expertise and work product.

2. Is a document management system the same as knowledge management?

No. A DMS stores and governs documents. Knowledge management adds search, curation and reuse on top.

3. Do I need a new platform to use AI on firm knowledge?

Not always. Many DMS vendors now offer AI features or connections to approved AI tools.

4. How do ethical walls work with AI search?

The AI should only retrieve content the user is permitted to see. Test this with a walled matter before rollout.

5. Can AI tools train on our client documents?

Check each vendor's terms. Some state that customer content is not used for training.

6. What is MCP in legal software?

The Model Context Protocol lets approved AI tools access content through a standard connector, subject to the vendor's controls.

7. Which option is best for a corporate legal department?

It depends on where content lives. Teams on Microsoft 365 or a cloud DMS often start there.

8. What does ABA Formal Opinion 512 require?

It discusses duties including competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision and reasonable fees when using generative AI.

9. How should we measure success?

Track time to find precedent, reuse rates and lawyer feedback in a pilot group.

10. Are these tools priced publicly?

Mostly not. Request written quotes listing users, AI features and storage.

11. Does using these tools guarantee ethics compliance?

No. Lawyers remain responsible for supervision and confidentiality. Have qualified counsel review your setup.
